Although we were poo-pooing remakes earlier, this is one we could potentially get on board with.
A US remake of Japanese horror anime Death Note has been in the works for some time, but it appears to be moving forward.
Adam Wingard, who directed last year's The Guest, has been lined up to helm the new take on the mind-bending classic.
Death Note, for those who don't know, follows a notebook that comes with a unique gift - anyone whose name is written in said notebook dies a pretty horrific death.
When a young student finds the notebook, he decides to cleanse the world of evil and, in doing so, unleashes consequences he couldn't possibly have imagined.
As we mentioned, Adam Wingard's The Guest was one of our top ten films of 2014 and we've been following his career with plenty of expectation for some time.
We had hoped he might be in the running for the Escape From New York remake, or possibly even something with a bigger budget and more studio backing.
That said, he's a pretty solid choice to remake Death Note and we're guessing he wants to hold off on taking the studio money and retain some of his indie credibilities.
Wingard's next film, The Woods, is expected in cinemas in early 2016 so we can expect Death Note at a later stage.
