As we reported a few weeks, staffers at the United Nations had more than a little problem with the fact that Wonder Woman was being made an Honorary Ambassador.
Briefly, the problem was that staffers felt putting a highly sexualised version of a woman - much less a superhero - wasn't exactly in keeping with the standards of the UN or what they represent. A petition with over 45,000 signatures was collected and, it seems, the UN has heard them.
UN spokesperson Jeffrey Brez, in a statement on the issue, said that staffers "voiced a concern that they didn’t feel it was appropriate for a fictional character to be representing women and girls." Originally, the plan was for Wonder Woman to remain as an Ambassador through 2017 and, most likely, up to the film's release date in June.
However, the UN has closed the ambassadorship early and will formally end on Friday. Brez, however, says that this isn't due to the petition and that some honorary ambassadorships only last a few days. In March, Angry Birds were made special envoys for climate change. Again, really.
Either way, it brings to an end a really, really weird chapter in popular culture and geopolitics. It's almost like that time Captain America became a Nazi. No, really.
