Comedy duos on film have existed since the beginning of film itself.
Going all the way back to Abbot & Costello and Laurel & Hardy, comedic double-acts have become a staple and through the years, there's been some unlikely ones. One such unlikely is pairing is Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, who star in Daddy's Home, out on general release on December 26th. This isn't the first time they've starred together either, appearing in 2010's The Other Guys.
So, with that in mind, we've counted the five best on-screen comedy duos. Take a look!
5. TINA FEY & AMY POEHLER (Baby Mama, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues)
Probably the two most recognisable female comedians working today, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have always worked well together since their time on Saturday Night Live. Since then, they've gone off to forge their own comedic careers; Fey with 30 Rock and Poehler with Parks & Rec. The duo also paired up for Baby Mama, an underrated comedy in 2008 and appeared in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.
4. MARK WAHLBERG & WILL FERRELL (The Other Guys, Daddy's Home)
Yes, it's absolutely an unlikely pairing, but that's what makes it work so well. Walhberg, known for making serious crime thrillers like The Departed, was more than happy to send up his own image in The Other Guys whilst Ferrell got stuck into the action setpieces here with relish.
3. OWEN WILSON & BEN STILLER (Zoolander, Starsky & Hutch)
As members of the so-called Frat Pack, Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller have starred in many comedies together with varying degrees of success. There's the more family-friendly efforts like Night At The Museum to the broad comedy of Zoolander and Starsky & Hutch. They also starred together in Wes Anderson's The Royal Tennenbaums, with Stiller playing Chas Tennenbaum and Wilson playing Eli Cash.
2. GENE WILDER & RICHARD PRYOR (Stir Crazy, See No Evil Hear No Evil)
Trivia time! Pryor was the first choice to play the Sheriff, however studio executives objected due to Pryor's wild behaviour. Pryor, who was one of the writers on the film, reportedly led 'writing jams' that lasted long into the night and were usually filled with loud music and heavy cocaine use. After Blazing Saddles, the two would star in such classic comedies as Stir Crazy and See No Evil Hear No Evil, often playing up their completely at-odds comedic styles to brilliant effect.
1. BILL MURRAY & HAROLD RAMIS (Stripes, Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day)
Although Ramis only had a small role in Groundhog Day, he was in fact the director of said film. Like a lot of people on this list, Ramis and Murray met on Saturday Night Live and grew their relationship out from there. Their first effort together, Stripes, often features highly in best comedies of the '80s. Their other effort from that era, Ghostbusters, has since become a pop culture phenomenon and is one of the most successful comedies ever produced.
