Let's be honest, we all like the good guys, but we all LOVE the bad guys. Whether it's love love, or love to hate, we've all got a soft spot for a great villain, and sometimes a great villain is what pushes a good movie into excellence. While this year's mix of baddies are quite an eclectic bunch, one thing we did notice is the distinct lack of naughty females. Come on ladies, you're letting the (bad) side down!

Now, on with the list! And BEWARE, there are spoilers below!

10. Donald Sutherland as President Snow in THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE
The reasons behind Snow's love of The Hunger Games, and why he insists on keeping the poor poor and the rich rich, and why he's such an plain and simple evil man are never explained to us, but we get the impression it's because he gets off on being a bad man. It also helps that Donald Sutherland, one of the creepiest cinema presences in Hollywood, is playing him with such relish.

Most Evil Moment: arriving unannounced in Katniss' home, only to threaten to kill her, her family and everyone she loves.

9. Kristin Scott Thomas as Crystal in ONLY GOD FORGIVES
Ryan Gosling's brother has just been killed by a vigilante cop, so his mother - played by KST - arrives in town to make sure that revenge is dished out as cold as possible. Creepily over-familiar and space-invadery with her living son, with full conversations about his penis size, as well as an insatiable blood lust in retribution for her dead son, Only God Forgives is always at its best whenever Crystal is on screen.

Most Evil Moment: Ryan Gosling brings his date to meet his mother, and Kristin proceeds to unleash a tsunami of foul language in her direction. Jaw-droppingly awkward.

8. James Marsden as Jack Lime in ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES
The most popular and best looking news anchor at the newly set up GNN, Jack Lime is Ron Burgandy's new nemesis, whether Ron wants him to be or not. Between the awkward shouting matches across entire offices and the constant accidental rivalry, Lime has stepped up to be the new Wes Mantooth, including…

Most Evil Moment: … a massive brawl in a public area, which causes the arrival of several other news outlets, too. Just no touching of the hair or face!

7. Michael Shannon as General Zod in MAN OF STEEL
A bad man with his heart in a good place, at least initially. Zod wants to see his race continue to exist, no matter what the collateral damage might be. He has clearly been blinded by the destruction of his entire planet and 99.99999999% of its population, so his mentally instability can be excused to a point.

Most Evil Moment: That point is when he decides to build New Krypton on the ruins of Earth, once he's destroyed it with his World Engine. Not cool, Zod. Not cool.

6. Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug in THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG
Cumberbatch also plays the Necromancer in this Hobbit sequel, but it's the dragon we're all here for. With a voice like poisoned caramel, wings like a bat, a perma-grin exposing those teeth, and all-engulfing fireballs for when the opportunity calls for it, Smaug is one of the best cinematic dragons there's ever been.

Most Evil Moment: That cliffhanger ending, knowing there's so much worse yet to come.

5. Benedict Cumberbatch as John Harrison in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS
A morally complex character, who has been made powerful - and then evil - by the government he was created to protect. Cumberbatch once agains puts that evil voice to good work, but this time he's been buffed up so he can still go toe to toe with an entire room of Klingons. We might've felt some compassion for the put-upon anti-hero…

Most Evil Moment: … had he not kerb-stomped on Alice Eve, and then squashed her father's skull in his hands in front of her.

4. Sir Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin in IRON MAN 3
A difficult one to place, this. He is, by all accounts, a terrorist who enjoys blowing up innocent civilians. Until we realise that he's actually not, in a rug-pull that's equal parts hilarious, mind-twisting smart, and slightly infuriating.

Most Evil Moment: Those viral videos, upselling his campaign of terror.

3. Leonardo Di Caprio as Calvin Candie in DJANGO UNCHAINED
Leo has always had a slightly unhinged glint in his eyes, even when he's playing much-loved types in Titanic and Romeo & Juliet, there's always a sense of unease. So well done to Tarantino for finally bringing that inner evil out, and Di Caprio relishes the role of a blackhearted slave owner. Although Sam Jackson as his head slave would also be worthy of a place on this list, you get the feeling he's only bad because that's what Candie made him.

Most Evil Moment: Setting the dogs on a misbehaving slave. Jayzus.

2. Sharlto Copley as Kruger in ELYSIUM
As a bounty hunter for hire, and hired by Jodie Foster to hunt down Matt Damon, Copley's Kruger is a no-holds-barred villain who enjoys being just about as bad as a human being can get. His inhumanity is so OTT that he makes Foster's power-hungry nasty politician seem like a non-entity. Oddly enough, Copley also played possibly the worst villain of the year in Oldboy.

Most Evil Moment: Having JUST had his face blown off by a grenade, Copley gets right back up, madder and more evil than ever, to continue hunting down his quarry. Bad ass evil right there.

1. Special Effects as Space in GRAVITY
Some villains have a reason for being villainous. Some villains just enjoy it. But space is just space, and it destroys because that's all it can do. It's so passive to the existence of life, so apathetic about its nullifying nature at everything in its path, that you can't help but be constantly terrified by it. Sandra Bullock, George Clooney and the rest can tell you all too well, it's not here to kill you, but it will kill you anyway.

Most Evil Moment: Any time the camera is off Earth, and we see nothing but the massive black lifeless expanse.
