Tony Dyson, creator of R2-D2 from the Star Wars franchise, has passed away aged 68.
Dyson's body was found in Malta today, several days after he was reported missing by neighbours. An investigation is underway but there is no foul play suspected.
He was working for the White Toy Company when he was commissioned to create four R2 units for George Lucas' space opera in 1976. Two remote controlled versions and two other for Kenny Baker to sit in. Dyson and his studio also worked on another of other blockbusters including Superman II and Moonraker.
His work on Star Wars however will undoubtedly be his most recognisable with R2-D2 becoming one of the most iconic characters throughout Star Wars and appearing in all seven of the film installments to date.
