It hasn't been released in Irish cinemas yet and it's only just now getting a national expansion in the US, but the studio behind Sicario - Lionsgate - are already putting together a sequel.
If you haven't read our review, do it now and get hyped because Sicario's going to blow you away. Anyway, Taylor Sheridan has signed on to develop the sequel to Sicario and it's rumoured that Benicio Del Toro's character will be brought to the forefront for the sequel. It's easy to see why - his character and his performance in Sicario was fantastic and in a film of sheer quality, it really says something that he stood out from everything and everyone.
It's not yet known if Denis Villeneuve will be returning to direct the sequel as he'll probably have his hands full with the Blade Runner sequel, but the rumour is that he'll be involved in some aspect of the sequel. Depending on how the Blade Runner shoot works out and that other film he's doing with Amy Adams, Story of Your Life, he's going to have a pretty full dance-card without him.
So, thoughts on a Sicario sequel? If it's not clear from our review of Sicario, we absolutely loved it. So you'd think a sequel would be a brilliant idea, right? That we'd be all for it, yeah? Nope.
Sicario, in our opinion, works as a standalone film. It's a contained story and the mystery that surrounds certain characters work in that context. It has a power in that mystery and gaps of knowledge so by shining a light on them, taking away any kind of mystique just cheapens. Don't get us wrong - we'll go in with an open mind and hope for the best, but we honestly thought Sicario was perfect as it was.
It didn't need a sequel. Then again, we'd have said the same about Blade Runner - but putting Denis Villeneuve and Roger Deakins in the production and the original screenwriter on script duties has us rethinking that statement. Check back in with us if this Sicario sequel becomes a reality and remind us how wrong we were.
