It's been a rough summer for the box office. But 'Spider-Man Far From Home' is doing alright with $850 million in receipts after two weeks in cinemas.
'Far From Home' has been doing well with critics as well as audiences. It's earned praise for mashing up the superhero movie genre and teen flick effectively, and establishing a post 'Avengers Endgame' world well.
Jake Gyllenhaal's performance as Mysterio also earned high praise, though let's be honest - we all saw that twist that he was actually the bad guy coming.
Mind you, we didn't know all the details. That Quentin Blake is actually a former employee of Stark Industries who stole illusion technology to create the Elementals.
But as it turns out, that twist was originally going to be twistier.
Screenwriter Chris McKenna recently told Collider:
"There were some early, early versions of this movie where Mysterio was a Skrull. There were a lot of Skrull versions of the story early on. When you’re doing a con artist movie, what we finally landed on—we sat down and talked about how do we keep on fooling the audience, how do we keep on having a lot of fun reveals? How many distractions can we get away with before people want to murder us? [The Mysterio Skrull reveal] was an early idea about why he was doing everything he was doing."
While they didn't use the Skrull idea with Mysterio, it did tie into the post credits sequence that reveals that Nick Fury and Maria Hill were Skrulls all along.
It begs the question, who else could be a Skrull in future Marvel installments?
