From the makers of Despicable Me and Minions, no less.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Universal’s Illumination Entertainment and Nintendo are reportedly close to a deal which will bring the video game to the big screen in animated form for the first time.
In recent years Universal and Nintendo have been working together on bringing Super Mario themed attractions to Universal theme parks and it would appear discussions have now branched out into a potential movie.
Discussions are at an early stage and it’s unlikely we’ll see Mario and Luigi coming to cinemas for a couple of years at least.
This wouldn’t be the first ever Super Mario Bros. movie, however. Remember, the ill-fated 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. starring Bob Hoskins? We hardly do. Let’s just say, it was not well received.
In an interview with The Guardian Hoskins once answered these questions like this-
What is the worst job you’ve done?
Super Mario Brothers.
What has been your biggest disappointment?
Super Mario Brothers.
If you could edit your past, what would you change?
I wouldn’t do Super Mario Brothers.
An animated movie would have to be a step-up from that. Wouldn’t it?
