The 'Rugrats' live-action movie that nobody really asked for is happening and has found a director. Paramount has announced that it will be helmed by David Bowers.
The British director, and former animator of 'Astro Boy', may not be a household name but has directed three 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' movies to date and will be seen as a safe pair of hands for 'Rugrats' by the studio. Futurama and Star Trek: Enterprise writer David A. Goodman will pen the script.
Rugrats was the Nickelodeon cartoon that first aired in 1991, ran for 172 episodes and went on to become one of the most popular children's TV programmes of its time. Irish viewers will remember it as a popular fixture on 'The Den'.

Rugrats was also made into a trio of animated movies between 1998 and 2003 and followed the trials and tribulations of one-year-old Tommy Pickles and his friends. A follow-up series to the original show aired from 2003 - 2008 and followed Tommy and Chuckie in their pre-teen days.
'Dora the Explorer' and 'Are You Afraid of the Dark?' are two more titles that Paramount are trying to breathe new life into and that we can expect to see on the big screen in the coming years.
Paramount has set a tentative release date of January, 2021 for 'Rugrats'.
