It really does speak to how painfully stupid Western culture has become that a movie like 'The Hunt' became such a flashpoint of controversy, yet nobody's actually seen it.
For those who may be blissfully unaware of one of the dumbest - and that really is saying something - stories in the movie industry, here's a quick walkthrough. Essentially, the trailer for 'The Hunt' was released online and looked like a rehash of 'Battle Royale', 'The Hunger Games' and every other man-hunting thriller you can think of. The key difference here was that there was an element of social satire laced over the top, where you had very "white-trash" looking types being hunted by elites.
Naturally, Fox News had an aneurysm over it and that made its way into Fuckface Von Clownstick Donald Trump's field of vision and, from there, the whole thing went parabolic (look it up) and Universal pulled it from the release schedule. Everyone went crazy over a movie that almost nobody saw, and that was basically the story of 'The Hunt'.
Until now, that is. In a lengthy interview with THR, Jason Blum, Damon Lindelof and Nick Cuse - the movie's producer and screenwriters, respectively - got frank about what happened. "None of us were interested in taking sides with this movie," Blum declared at the top of the interview.
Lindelof explains that the movie's trailer came on the heels of two mass shootings in the US, and after test-screening the movie in the week that followed, nobody made the connection between the two - despite what right-wing media made it out to be. "For us, there was just a fundamental frustration that nobody was talking about the movie. They were all talking about what their perception of the movie was — a perception that was largely formed based on all the events in the aftermath of the horrific weekend before," Lindelof stated.
So far, the only release date confirmed is March 13th in the US, but the likelihood is that it will be released here on Ireland on the same date. Until then, here's the new trailer and the fantastic poster for it.
