That wasn't all he starred in... the Brooklyn born star also proved his method acting chops in The Magnificent Seven, The Misfits, How to Steal a Million, and The Godfather: Part III. More recently he had roles in Mystic River, The Holiday, and The Ghost Writer, alongside Ewan McGregor.
Most famed for his appearances in spaghetti Westerns throughout the 60s, he also nurtured a varied career onstage and on TV, appearing as Alvaro in Tennessee Williams’ The Rose Tattoo and villain Mr. Freeze on Batman opposite (the) Adam West.
TV was his first and last love, as it happens. He book ended his career with a debut in The Philco Television Playhouse in 1949, then he landed an Emmy for his role as Bernard Zimberg in Nurse Jackie in 2009.
Throughout his career, he has shared screen and stage with such icons as Marilyn Monroe, Clint Eastwood, Clark Gable, Steve McQueen, Yul Brynner, Peter O'Toole, and Al Pacino, to name but a few.
He is survived by his wife and their three children, Peter, Roberta and Katherine.
