We've been following the Spider-Man story for quite some time. Some of you may recall we did a bit of speculation on the topic a while back.
As you'd totally guess, we were WAY off on who's going to be the next Spidey as a shortlist last week revealed almost none of our choices. Dang, etc.
It's now understood, however, that Asa Butterfield is the studio favourite. The new Spidey, which will slot into the Marvel Cinematic Universe / World-Eating Juggernaut, is going to be younger than previous iterations.
Yet, somehow, it WON'T be an origin story. So figure that one out.
Butterfield was most recently seen in the so-so Ender's Game alongside Harrison Ford and Martin Scorsese's 3D extravaganza Hugo and has just recently turned 18, which is good for him.
According to sources, Butterfield was Marvel's choice from the get-go so we're guessing he's more or less a lock.
So, what do we think of Butterfield? Maybe. Ender's Game had the fault of being surrounded by huge talent, a decent director and tons of special effects, meaning Butterfield was drowned out in all of that. There'll be more of that in Captain America: Civil War, which the character is due to make his first appearance.
We can't say we were huge fans of Ender's Game, despite all the quality put around it, but we can't lay the blame squarely at Butterfield's feet. Honestly, he strikes as way too serious for the character. It's probably because the only films we've seen him have cast him as such and we're basing our decision on that.
It's not too late to call Donald Glover, y'know...
