Only last week we learned that Deadpool 2 would be losing director Tim Miller. Now another superhero movie, The Flash, starring Ezra Miller in the titular role, has lost its director. For a second time.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Rick Famuyiwa, the director of Sundance hit Dope, has dropped from helming The Flash due to ‘creative differences.’
This was the same reason given by Miller for dropping out of Deadpool’s sequel as well as the same reason for Seth Grahame-Smith, who was originally assigned to direct The Flash, leaving the project back in April.
Famuyiwa, who was given the project last June, reportedly wanted the project to have ‘more edge’ (perhaps than was being allowed by Warner Bros and DC) and was a major contributor in the casting of Kiersey Clemons and Billy Crudup in key roles in the film.
Famuyiwa told THR in a statement: ‘When I was approached by Warner Bros. and DC about the possibility of directing The Flash, I was excited about the opportunity to enter this amazing world of characters that I loved growing up, and still do to this day.
‘I was also excited to work with Ezra Miller, who is a phenomenal young actor. I pitched a version of the film in line with my voice, humour and heart. While it’s disappointing that we couldn’t come together creatively on the project, I remain grateful for the opportunity.
‘I will continue to look for opportunities to tell stories that speak to a fresh generational, topical and multicultural point of view. I wish Warner Bros., DC, Jon Berg, Geoff Johns and Ezra Miller all the best as they continue their journey into the speed force.’
The departure of Famuyiwa likely means the movie’s start of production, which was scheduled to begin in March, and release (originally March 2018) will both be delayed.
