Although Jason Momoa and director Corin Hardy had both backed away from the long-awaited reboot, Sony Pictures still had the reboot of the '90s goth-superhero still on the release schedule for 2019.
As of today, however, that's no longer the case as the studio has now officially pulled the date some two months after the news broke about Momoa and Hardy's departure. While the film hasn't been actively cancelled by Sony as such, it's all but a given that there'll be nothing happening with it any time soon for a number of reasons - not the least of which being that the project just seems doomed to failure every time.
The planned reboot went through literally about a dozen directors and stars (Mark Wahlberg was even interested at one point), each coming into with the intention of honouring the original and giving it a new lease of life - and all of them backed away after a period of time. Corin Hardy and Jason Momoa's attempt was, by far, the closest it's come to a reality as it was reportedly five weeks out from production when they backed out.
While the first one with Brandon Lee became a cult hit, subsequent sequels and a television series failed to make any kind of impact - so it's no surprise that there isn't a lot of people exactly clamouring for this either.
Jason Momoa will next be seen in 'Aquaman', with a trailer due to drop this weekend at San Diego Comic Con.
