Taylor Lautner has put his money where his mouth is and has optioned a non-fiction article from The New York Times to be scripted and filmed next year, with none other than art house darling, Gus Van Sant, directing.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, details on the project are still emerging, but there is expected to be an announcement this week. The budget will apparently be small, but production is likely to move swiftly, with the trade paper saying that a start date for the first quarter of next year has been earmarked. Lautner has been criticized heavily for his attempts to simply capitalise on the fangirl hysteria that surrounds Twilight, by headlining the awful Abduction. But that film bombed in America, and he's obviously thought about where his career would be heading after a couple more flops like that.

Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 is out on November 18th, with the second film due mid-summer. He needs to garner some positive notices, at the very least, before then. Fair play to him for going for it - he's still a teenager and is producing flicks. If Van Sant can't get a performance out of him then few directors could.
