As this controversy surrounding this year's Academy Awards wages on, one of the films that's been overlooked to a degree is Creed.
Directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone, the film's had an exceptional run with both audiences and critics alike (we gave it four stars, FYI). Despite all this, however, the film was largely overlooked when it came to the nominations, only scoring a Best Supporting Actor gong for Stallone.
The #OscarsSoWhite controversy, which has seen Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Spike Lee lead a boycott of the ceremony, has cast a cloud of this year's Oscars. For his part, Stallone acknowledged that it was an issue. According to Stallone, he asked director Ryan Coogler for direction on the subject, with Coogler telling him to "go and represent the film... We feel you deserve it, but eventually things will change.' I said, 'If you want me to go I'll go. If you don't, I won't. And he said, 'No, I want you to go.' That's the kind of guy he is."
Stallone pretty much has the Best Supporting Actor gong locked up, as there's nobody else in that category who can touch him. As for Ireland's efforts, Room is a strong contender in the Best Picture category as is Lenny Abrahamson for Best Director. Saoirse Ronan is in the running for Best Actress, however it's very likely that Brie Larson will snag it here.
