With 'Stan & Ollie' now in cinemas, you might be forgiven for thinking that it's just strictly a comedy about the final years of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.
After all, you've got Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly - two well-known comedic actors - in the lead roles, and it's written and directed by the guy who did Irvine Welsh's 'Filth'. But, as all three stressed in our interview, 'Stan & Ollie' is much more than just a comedy - it's a love story.
"I think, funnily enough, where the majority of the laughs come from in this come from the wives, because a lot of that acerbic wit comes from them" Baird explained. "The emotional beat of the story comes through Stan & Ollie."
As for learning how they connected with their characters, John C. Reilly had a pretty straight route to Oliver Hardy. "I was an actual clown, when I was a younger guy, so I'm very familiar with the kind of stuff they did. A lot of my work is directly informed by Oliver Hardy, when we were doing 'Ralph Breaks The Internet', we talked all the time in studio about Oliver Hardy."
'Stan & Ollie' is currently in Irish cinemas.
