JJ Abrams took on a lot of risk and even more pressure when he decided to tackle possibly the most loved movie franchise of all time. And that gamble has paid off.

Estimates from evening shows alone are showing Star Wars: The Force Awakens trouncing previous record holder Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' Part 2 in 'midnight screening' box office takings. 'Arry coined just under $44 million while Hans Solo and co are looking closer to $60 million - which would put it firmly on course to be the biggest opener of all time.

This time of year rarely sees huge openings at the US box office; rather strong multiple showings as families take a break from shopping and festivities to go the flicks. But projections for Star Wars are that it could also smash highest ever weekend opener, Jurrasic World's $208 million. Currently, it's predicted to do as high as $220 million. Insane numbers.

Glowing reviews will only help, while huge openings are generally the younger demo rushing out; older fans of the franchise are likely to take their time and repeat viewings are sure to be strong.
