Star Trek Beyond is set to reveal that helmsman of the USS Enterprise, Hikaru Sulu is actually gay.
Sulu, who is portrayed by John Cho in the rebooted film series, has never had any romantic partners since the original Star Trek series but it was revealed that he had a daughter in Star Trek: Generations.
Fans are going to be introduced to both Sulu's daughter and his husband in Beyond which is set to be released at the end of the month.
“I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations,” Cho told the Australian Herald Sun.
The move is a nod to George Takei who was the original Sulu in the Star Trek television series and the subsequent big screen adventures. Takei came out publicly in 2005 after then Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill that would have legalised same sex marriage in California.
In 2008, Takei and his husband Brad Altman became the first same-sex couple to apply for a marriage license in California and held a wedding ceremony later that year. They have been together for 29 years.
