It’s been eighteen years since the beloved Disney flick about a kick-ass Chinese warrior was released.
In fact, Disney have also been mulling over remaking the animation into a live-action reboot (hardly surprising...), so if this move from Sony sparks them into action, there could be a fight over property rights.
Mulan, which tells the story of a young woman who takes her father’s place in the army, was previously made into a live-action film in 2009.
For the Sony project, they plan to shoot the film in China with a mostly Chinese cast and a Chinese partner producing and co-financing.
The planned project is one of several announced by Sony that the studio will develop with its own former executive, Doug Belgrad.
Other works-in-progress listed include Bad Boys 3, Zombieland 2, a Charlie’s Angels reboot with Elizabeth Banks reportedly directing, and a live-action Peter Rabbit movie starring James Corden and Rose Byrne.
So plenty to be excited about we think.
