2016's 'Sing Street' was a smart, well-made and enjoyably nostalgic tour through Dublin in the '80s, with a fantastic soundtrack and affecting performances by its cast.
Therefore, it shouldn't come as a surprise that 'Sing Street' is now making the transition from beloved cult movie to Broadway musical, with the musical set to open in April of this year in New York's Lyceum Theatre. Of course, this isn't the first time a movie by John Carney has gone to Broadway and done very well for itself.
'Once' successfully transitioned from movie to musical, with the likes of Ronan Keating taking up the lead role along the way. This time around, the cast of the New York run for 'Sing Street' will be made up of up-and-comers, replacing the likes of Jack Reynor, Lucy Boynton, Aiden Gillen and Maria Doyle Kennedy from the movie.
Behind the curtains, there looks to be an equally all-star lineup working on it. Enda Walsh, who previously wrote David Bowie's musical play 'Lazarus', as well as 'Once', has written the book for 'Sing Street', while music and lyrics are by John Carney and Gary Clark, with choreography by Sonya Tayeh of 'Moulin Rouge!' fame and direction by Rebecca Taichman.
Depending on how successful the run is on Broadway and the likelihood is strong, 'Sing Street' will likely begin touring worldwide and eventually land in Dublin at some point in the near future.
