The 2011 film based on the superhero barely broke even at the box office and was critically panned. Still DC feels confident enough to give the character another go in their upcoming Green Lantern Corps project…
The Wrap reports that Tom Cruise is the studio’s first preference for taking on the superhero role also known as Hal Jordan. Cruise will next be seen in The Mummy remake.
Also on the list are Joel McHale, Bradley Cooper, Armie Hammer, and Jake Gyllenhaal. Interesting Ryan Reynolds himself, who originally played the role in its first big screen outing, is also being considered. We doubt he'll be abandoning Deadpool anytime soon though.
Bradley Cooper meanwhile is no stranger to superhero movies. He currently voices Rocket Racoon in Guardians of the Galaxy, the sequel for which is out this year. Of course, there are obviously no rules for playing two superheroes – Exhibit A. Chris Evans; Exhibit B. Ryan Reynolds. Cooper also auditioned for the first Green Lantern movie.
We wouldn’t typically see Jake Gyllenhaal going for it as he tends to like his edgy, brooding, independent productions, but then again he has defended the genre in the past. Speaking at SXSW last year, he said: “Superhero movies have inspired me. I remember when I saw ‘Thor” I was really inspired. There’s a reason for myth. They are so moving and so important.”
Joel McHale – best-known for TV comedies The Soup and Community – and Armie Hammer – who was hoping to have a hit with both The Lone Ranger and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. but neither of them really took off – could also be very interesting choices.
There is no word on when Green Lantern Corps - which expected to be released in 2020 - will begin shooting. The casting process is still in the very early stages, and there are no talks with any of the actors as of yet.
The film will tell the story of a group of humans who join the titular interstellar police force that protects the universe.
