We’ve talked before about how impossible Marvel seems to find it to make female superhero movies. Even DC is one step ahead with Wonder Woman on the way.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, the Russo brothers who directed Captain America: Civil War, and even Agent Coulson himself, Clark Gregg, have all said they want to see a Black Widow standalone movie, as indeed has Johansson herself. She has played the role in five Marvel films — Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Civil War.
In an interview with Variety as part of their Power Of Women issue, the actress seemed to be urging the studio (who have films scheduled right up to 2019, but still no Black Widow movie) to hurry up in giving her character a solo as she is getting impatient, and rightfully so.
The actress also referenced her rather impractical costume as she said: ‘If I did it, I'd have to do it while I still actually wanted to wear a skin-tight catsuit. I don't know how much longer that's going to be.’
Johansson said she ‘would like for it to happen under the right circumstances’ and talked of the ‘opportunity to mine that storyline’ given the character’s intense backstory: ‘She's got a really rich origins story. There's a lot of places you can go — you can bring it back to Russia. You could explore the Widow program. There's all kinds of stuff that you could do with it.
‘You could really uncover the identity of who this person is, where she comes from and where she's part of.’
She also expressed her desire for it to be something unique and new: ‘I think it would just have to be very much like its own specific thing. It would have to have its own specific vibe. It would have been totally different than any of the other standalone films. I think if the fans wanted it enough, then it would probably become a reality.’
Well it's a reality we definitely hope will materialise soon.
