Carlow youngster Saoirse Ronan continues her assault on Hollywood with the news that she is to star in The Host, the film adaptation of the bestselling novel by Stephenie Meyer, who also penned a little known yarn called Twilight, reports Deadline.

The film will be a love story set in the near future on Earth, which has been assimilated by an alien species of benevolent parasites that call themselves "Souls." One such soul, the Wanderer, is fused with a dying human named Melanie Stryder, in an attempt to locate the last pocket of surviving humans on Earth. Ronan will apparently play both characters.

Andrew Niccol (who wrote The Truman Show) has penned the script and was attached to direct - it's unclear if he's still calling the shots.
