Deadpool has made Ryan Reynolds one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Between that, his devotion to his family, and him genuinely seeming like a really nice, funny, amicable guy, it’s no wonder he’s getting so much acclaim.
Ryan has also been the recipient of several accolades this year including being named one of GQ’s magazine’s Men of the Year and now being named EW’s Entertainer of the Year. And entertaining he has been.
The actor sat down and chatted with Entertainment Weekly about the honour and, inevitably, he got asked about Deadpool 2. Producer Simon Kinberg had previously stated that the sequel has to ‘tonally and stylistically be as fresh and original’ and also ‘as provocative and startling as the first film.’ He promises it will not just be a continuation of the first film made ‘bigger in scale and scope.’
Reynolds confirmed that they’re in the development stage on Deadpool 2 and about to move into production. He said they’re currently casting for Cable as well as are ‘looking at’ telekinetic female merc Domino as another character for the sequel.
Tim Miller, who directed the original and was due to shoot the sequel too, dropped out of the project reportedly due to ‘creative difference’ but rumoured to be more. However Ryan had nothing but praise to say of Miller: ‘There is not a human being on earth that worked harder on Deadpool than Tim. He’s an incredibly, incredibly talented director.’
As for David Leitch, who has now been assigned to direct Deadpool 2, and who previously helmed the fantastic John Wick, Ryan is getting us all psyched for the new guy: ‘Everybody was just a fan of his work. He’s just a guy who’s so muscular with his action.
‘He also really understands those Deadpool sensibilities and where we need to take the franchise from here. And I love John Wick. One of the things that David Leitch does that very few filmmakers can do these days is they can make a movie on an ultra tight minimal budget look like it was shot for 10-15 times what it cost.’
