Ryan Gosling's CV to date has been extremely varied, taking in rom-coms, action films, musicals, crime flicks and movies with political themes - but one thing he's missing is a role as an American hero.
That gap will soon be filled, however, as he is officially signed up to play the world's most famous astronaut, Neil Armstrong, in a new film about his life.
'First Man' is directed by Damien Chazelle - whom Gosling most recently worked with on La La Land - and is a biopic adapted from Josh Hansen's book 'First Man: A Life of Neil A. Armstrong'. The script was written by Josh Singer, who won an Oscar for his work on 'Spotlight'.
The film is expected to focus on the years 1961 - 1969, when NASA's moon landing mission project saw Armstrong become the first man on the moon.
2017 is shaping up to be a big year for Gosling, with rumours of an Oscar nomination for 'La La Land' and a role in the Blade Runner reboot in the pipeline.
