As we reported a few days ago, Leonardo DiCaprio's expressed an interest in playing Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Although the comment was most likely an off-hand comment, a film studio in Russia has decided to take him up on the offer. Sort of. The St. Petersburg-based studio, Lenfilm, have said they're putting together a film about the life of Vladimir Ilyich Ulanaov, better known as Lenin.
The idealogical figurehead of the 1917 October Revolution that led to the formation of the Soviet Union, Lenin has been the subject of a number of films already and has been played by a diverse range of actors - including Patrick Stewart, Mike Myers, Ben Kingsley and Michael Ironside.
However, despite Lenin appearing as a character in well over 100 films and TV shows since the '20s, there's been no mainstream Hollywood biopic of his life or work as founder of the Soviet Union.
The Russian studio, Lenfilm, believes that DiCaprio's the man to play Lenin and have the "scenery and props" to recreate the era. In fact, the two look reasonably similar and it's understood DiCaprio has some Russian ancestry to boot.
Of course, there's little chance of this actually happen as Lenin's just way too controversial of a character to even be considered for a large-scale, Hollywood-style biopic. A cursory read of any history book would tell you that there are way too many inconsistencies, inaccuracies and everything else tied to Lenin that'd make it next to impossible to adapt.
