Rogue One: A Star Wars Story narrowly avoided being knocked off the top of the box-office this passing weekend, but it was close.
Rogue One took an estimated $21,972,000 as it closed in on $500 million domestically, while the new drama, Hidden Figures, starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe and Kevin Costner pushed it close. It's based on a true story of African American mathematicians who helped NASA in the race to put a man in space and opened at $21.8 million in second spot. The well-reviewed Figures should have strong legs in the coming weeks.
Elsewhere Underworld: Blood Wars, where Kate Beckinsale continued to slap baddies around in a latex onesie, could only manage $13.1 million to place fourth.
La La Land expanded to over 1500 screens and took a further $10 million; it's the sleeper hit of awards season so far and should see a big bump post-Golden Globes.
