Although 'The Twilight Zone' may have had several reboots, including the most recent one with Jordan Peele, the original continues to stand the test of time.
Created by Rod Serling, it's hard to quantify just how truly groundbreaking the original series was and how far ahead of time Serling was. The TV series effectively kickstarted the careers of dozens of writers, directors and actors, not to mention inspiring countless more with it.
Richard Donner, the director of 'Superman' and 'Lethal Weapon', cut his teeth as a director on one of the most well-known episodes, 'Nightmare At 20,000 Feet'. That episode was then remade in the movie version of 'The Twilight Zone', with George Miller of 'Mad Max' fame directing that remake.
Serling was also one of the screenwriters on the original 'Planet of the Apes' movie, and was the creator of another TV anthology series, 'Night Gallery'. Of course, the most notable influence in today's TV landscape is Charlie Brooker's 'Black Mirror', which takes a number of cues directly from Rod Serling and 'The Twilight Zone'.
A biopic on the life and career of Rod Serling has been teased for some years, but it looks like it's finally happening with a fantastic choice of director to see it made.
Richard Kelly, best known as the brains behind 'Donnie Darko', has been announced as the biopic's director. Kelly's last film, 2009's 'The Box', was actually based on a short story by Richard Matheson that eventually become an episode of 'The Twilight Zone'.
There's been no word yet on who'll be playing Serling or a release date, but it's pretty exciting to see the director of 'Donnie Darko' back in action and with something that's bound to be an intriguing concept to work with.
