Robert Downey Jr has given us a much needed update on the future of his beloved Iron Man. With the expiration of his contract, does he at 48 years of age want to keep saving the world by kicking the shit out of code-writing super villains? With bazillions in the bank, does he really need to? And what about us; do we want to see more Iron Man?
The answer, from my point of view, is no; not in another stand alone movie at least. The third movie was fantastic, perhaps the best of the three. To keep churning them out just for the sake of making a buck would eventually just piss everyone off; even the superfans. Shouldn't they leave well enough alone, end on a high and preserve the nice little bow that Shane Black wrapped things up with at the close of part 3?
That being said, I have no objections to seeing more of Iron Man as part of The Avengers; we haven't quite exhausted that one yet.
Here's what the man himself had to say (to Entertainment Weekly) about the future of the franchise:
"I'd go start another one tomorrow, but it's not tomorrow... And there are a lot of other considerations. But I also don’t like the idea of leaving people hanging or leaving people in the lurch."
"My intent is to launch another franchise, independent of any that I can even imagine right now... My intent is to dominate the playing field for as long as I can, with my own challenges, with myself."
On a side note, fairly cocky isn't he?
So he may not continue on with a fourth, fifth and sixth Iron Man (that's not to say Marvel won't carry on without him though) but he will remain a major player on the Hollywood landscape for some time to come. And what of this new franchise, will it be super hero stuff? What would you like to see Downey Jr do next?
