If you read our Blade Runner 2 info-dump from a couple of weeks, you'll know that although Ryan Gosling's name has been attached to Blade Runner 2 for some time, there's been little in the way of an official confirmation for it.
While, again, it's not an official confirmation with the studio letterhead over the top of it, it's as good as we're going to get in the meantime. In a recent interview promoting his best film in years, The Martian, Sir Scott opened up a bit about the Blade Runner sequel. "I got Harrison back. Because Harrison said, “Meh,” and I said, “No, read this.” And I think he said, “This is the best script I’ve ever had.” We’ve been working on it for a couple of years."
Scott also reaffirmed that fan theory that's been bugging people for the past 27 years, namely that Rick Deckard - Harrison Ford's character - is a Replicant, one of the human-like androids in the film. "Of course he’s a bloody Replicant! He’s going to have to admit it," exclaimed Scott.
On the topic of Ryan Gosling, Scott intimated that he'll be taking over the reigns of the franchise and that there could be more sequels for Blade Runner. Moreover, Scott flat-out said that he's got Gosling in for the sequel and what age he'll be playing. "Coming back it’ll be 2047, roughly. As young as you can play Ryan Gosling. He’s 34, but he looks 27 when he’s doing his push-ups. So maybe 2050."
Although Scott's not directing, he is still an executive producer and has been closely involved with it since the very beginning, so it's intriguing to see where the film is headed. Villenueve, meanwhile, has been schtum about the whole thing bar a few bits here and there. There's no release date set for it, but all that will change in the coming months when Villeuneuve comes off his next film.
