After so many false starts and development hells, the all-female Ghostbusters is real and we've got the pictures to prove it.

These on-set images see Wiig, McKinnon and McCarthy in action and - from what we think - it looks like a period piece.

Take a look.

Now, we don't know about you, but Wiig's ensemble looks very retro. Think Kathleen Turner in Romancing The Stone and you're on the right track.

Also, McKinnon's whole leather-biker thing and those glasses suggest late '80s Billy Idol and the like.

This tracks with the official synopsis released late last night, which places Wiig and McCarthy as two authors who write a book "positing that ghosts are real. Flash forward a few years and Wiig lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia U. Which is pretty sweet, until her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia."

Let's step back for a minute and look at it objectively.

If you remember back to the first Ghostbusters, that was pretty much the same plot. Bunch of academics believe in the paranormal, discover that it's real. What time period was that? The '80s. So, by that logic, we must assume one of two things.

Either the film is set in the same time period, meaning that they too are discovering ghosts in the same way Murray, Ramis et al did OR it's set in our time and people have forgotten about those weird events in the '80s and '90s when New York was attacked by a giant Mr. Stay Puft.

Are we reading into this WAY too much? Yes. Do you think we're right? Let us know in the comments!
