The BFI London Flim Festival is still underway, with more A-list stars drawing a crowd to England's capital than you could shake a stick at. We were lucky enough to have spent the last few days in London, catching up with a whole plethora of thespians who've brought their latest efforts along to the festival. One such junket I attended was Labor Day, a movie by Jason Reitman (Juno, Up In The Air) starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin.
Unfortunately neither Jason nor Kate were around for filmed interviews - we'll forgive Kate, considering the fact that she's got a bun in the oven - but thankfully the very affable Mr Brolin was on hand to charm the pants off us. Well, not quite literally. Also I was wearing shorts, not pants.
Though Labor Day won't hit Irish cinemas until February of next year, we're already buzzing about it. Brolin stars here as an escaped convict who runs in to Winslet's depressed single mother and her charming, wise-beyond-his-years son upon which a strangely intimate familial bond between the three unfolds. Yes, Brolin's Frank is serving time for a very real and serious crime, but he's a loving, kind man who, randomly enough, makes a mean peach pie.
I had the pleasure of chatting to Brolin about his career highlights, among which he listed his experience of making W as being up there at the apex, how he endeavours to choose roles that go against his gut instinct; if he all but pees his pants at the thoughts of a role, then he knows he's gotta do it. What's more, Brolin quashes those rumours that him and Zack Snyder were ever in serious discussions over his potential casting in Batman; 'we were never in talks'. Upon seeing the backlash experienced by Ben Affleck, Brolin reckoned he may have dodged a pretty personal bullet 'what's happened with Ben is different, that was *gasps* pretty personal.'
