Bad news, robots-fighting-monsters fans.

Since the studio company juggling between Legendary, Universal and Warners. went down, Pacific Rim 2 has been on thin ice for quite some time. Now, however, it looks as though Universal's gearing up to pull the plug on the whole thing. An official statement released yesterday, on the surface anyway, suggests that "the decision was made to delay the production and release of ‘Pacific Rim’ so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film."

What's interesting, however, is that it wasn't so much delayed as it was pulled completely from Universal's release schedule. Guillermo Del Toro, the brains behind Pacific Rim, is due to turn in a first draft and a budget any day now and, from what he's saying, there's still life in the thing yet.

Pacific Rim 2 was due for a release on August 4th, 2017, however Universal's now slotted Pitch Perfect 3 into that date instead which tells us that they're putting more value in Rebel Wilson dancing / singing to pop music than giant robots kicking the snot out of big-ass monsters. It's easy to see why, in fairness. Pitch Perfect 2 made a silly amount of money at the box-office ($285.2 million) and it was made for reasonably cheap money ($29 million). Compare that to Pacific Rim which had a tentpole budget ($190 million) and did reasonably well against it ($411 million) and you can see the logic behind it.

In the meantime, Del Toro's next film, Crimson Peak, is due for release on our screens in October before he heads off to possibly do Hellboy 3? Probably not.
