It was not a good weekend for new releases at the North American box-office, as The Dark Knight Rises continued to dominate.
Christopher Nolan's final instalment in his superb trilogy took a further $64.1 million over the weekend to take its worldwide tally to a staggering $537.3 million. That's still lagging a little behind The Dark Knight, but is on course to land in the top five highest grossers of all time. Other new openings were The Watch and Step Up 4. The former is a star heavy vehicle with Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller and Jonah Hill that couldn't put enough bums on seats to register as another other than a flop; it took in a paltry $13.5 million which would've been unheard for a comedy with these stars just a couple of years ago. I have been a huge fan of Vaughn since before he was box-office, but he needs a hit quick; both he and Stiller are increasingly inconsistent at the box-office of late - which seems to be a trend with former comedy stars (just ask Adam Sandler). Step Up 4 took just over $11 million - a fraction of the other sequels in the series.
Bowing this weekend is the mammoth budgeted Colin Farrell starring remake, Total Recall. The Irishman will be in Dublin alongside Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale in a couple of weeks to promote it.
