If you're of a certain vintage, you'll remember how insanely difficult Mega Man was.
The classic platform game for the Nintendo saw the blue cyborg fight off a different villain with a ridiculous name and superpower in each stage. You beat the end-of-level boss, you got his superpower. It was simple, but Mega Man became one of the most popular franchises on the Nintendo and Super Nintendo and spawned dozens of sequels.
Recently, Nintendo announced that it was stepping back into the film world following several aborted attempts to get some of its properties onto the big and small screen. A plan to bring Legend of Zelda to Netflix was scuttled before it even started, however there's fresh hope for another property - namely, Mega Man.
20th Century Fox have partnered with Chernin Entertainment and Nintendo / Capcom to start development on a film based on Mega Man. There's plenty of reasons to be optimistic here. For one, Chernin Entertainment are behind the resurgence of Planet of the Apes and have a good track record taking dormant properties and reinvigorating them.
Not only that, a heavy-hitter like Fox backing a videogame adaptation is pretty exciting. Universal already has World of Warcraft in hand whilst other studios are reportedly developing as-yet unnamed videogame properties. It'll be a good long while before we see anything concrete on this, however.
Studios are waiting to see how World of Warcraft and Assassin's Creed, the two videogame adaptations closest to release, pan out in the box office takings. If they gain a decent response and do well, films such as Mega Man and a good few others will kick into overdrive.
In short, it's all very exciting news for videogame fans.
