You couldn't really expect there to be a movie about 'Mortal Kombat' - one of the most ridiculously violent games in history - and it not carry an 'R' rating in the US.
The movie, which is currently in early pre-production, is being written by Greg Russo who confirmed that it will feature an 'R' rating. As well as this, Russo also confirmed that - for the first time ever - fatalities will feature in the movie.
Previously, the two live-action movies - 'Mortal Kombat', and 'Mortal Kombat: Armageddon' - were both pretty tame, primarily because the studio at that time wasn't convinced the movie would work if it featured gratuitous violence. You know, the thing that 'Mortal Kombat' was actually known for.
Anyway, the upcoming adaptation - which is being produced by 'Aquaman' director James Wan - will definitely have plenty of gratuitous violence. The specific fatalities for each character, however, haven't yet but you've got to imagine Scorpion's fire-breathing and Sub-Zero's spine-ripping moments have to feature.
Those are classics, and as important to 'Mortal Kombat' as the ridiculous music and the very weird costume that Raiden wore. Was it a smock of some kind? What the hell was that blue thing he wore in 'Mortal Kombat II', as well?
As for other news, Joe Taslim - who appeared in Indonesian action epics 'The Raid' and 'The Night Comes For Us' - is set to play Sub-Zero in the movie. No word yet on who'll be playing Johnny Cage, but don't be surprised if Iko Uwais ends up playing Liu Kang or Kung Lao.
'Mortal Kombat' is scheduled for release on March 5th, 2021.
