Michael Fassbender took home the gong for Best Supporting Actor at the prestigious Empire Awards last night, beating Daniel Brühl (Rush), Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), Richard Armitage (The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug) and Tom Hiddleston (Thor: The Dark World).

Our favourite Kerry-man has been nominated in similar categories in all the big awards ceremonies this year but this is the first award he has picked up for his role as a menacing slave owner in the multi-award winning flick from director/artist Steve McQueen 12 Years a Slave.

Other major winners from last night's ceremony were James McAvoy (Filth) - Best Actor, Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) - Best Actress and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine) - Best Supporting Actress.

Fellow Irishman (woop!) Aidan Turner (The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug) was honoured with the Best Male Newcomer Award. Best Female Newcomer went to Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street).

Fassbender is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for the same role at the IFTAs, which will be held this Saturday.
