Disney's live-action adaptation has been in the works for some time now and it may just have its first big signing in Melissa McCarthy.
Director Rob Marshall ("Mary Poppins Returns") is also attached to the project which will feature music from the 1989 original composer Alan Menken no less. Who could forget 'Under the Sea'? And if all that wasn't enough, Lin Manuel will also provide new music and produce the movie. David Magee will pen the script.
According to Variety, casting is well under way with Disney keen to make 'contemporary and compelling' casting choices. But McCarthy hasn't gone down well with everyone.
I LOVE Melissa McCarthy and she's amazing, but I was really pulling for Titus as Ursula pic.twitter.com/U4NaylmYL3

Mostly known for 'Bridesmaids', 'Spy' and 'The Heat', McCarthy has had a varied career but this will be one of her first family-friendly roles to date.
No release date for 'The Little Mermaid' has been released yet.
