Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace has claimed that he and Mel Gibson are working on a sequel to The Passion of the Christ.

Wallace, who won an Oscar for his script to the 1995 Best Picture Winner Braveheart, confirmed reports that he's working on a sequel that would focus on the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Passion of the Christ was the most successful independent film of all time, taking in $612 million worldwide on a $30 million production budget. Wallace said that he and Gibson only seriously began talking about a sequel while they were working on their latest effort. Hacksaw Ridge which was written by Wallace and directed by Gibson. The film centers on World War II Army medic Desmond Doss, the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Gibson has yet to comment on the rumours himself but has never ruled out the idea of a sequel in the past. Could it be the project to finally get Gibson out of the Hollywood dog house?
