James Gunn is ramping up his casting efforts for the follow-up of Guardians of the Galaxy and, already, the rumours are flying thick and fast.

It's been confirmed that Gunn has cast little-known actress Pom Kemeintieff in an as-yet unknown role, but there was a much bigger name in the mix for a role.

Matthew McConaughey is on record as saying that he's open to the idea of starring in a comic-book movie, however it's understood that he was offered a role by Gunn - which he refused.

It's reported that McConaughey was due to play the villain of Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, although nobody's really sure who the villain is. Castings should be announced pretty soon as the film is due to begin shooting in early 2016 for its release date of May 5, 2017.

Both Gunn and Pratt are on record discussing Vol. 2, with Pratt saying that the script made him cry and Gunn saying that it focuses on the relationship between fathers and son.

We don't know about you, but that scene when Groot (SPOILERS!) sacrifices himself for the team got us in right in the feels.

Let's watch it again so we can all cry over the loss of Matthew McConaughey in Guardians of the Galaxy.
