The long-awaited, live-action adaptation of 'Uncharted' is gathering pace, with the next big piece of casting revealed late last night.
THR reports that Mark Wahlberg is set to play Sully, a major character in the game series. Essentially a father figure to Nathan Drake, the game's protagonist, Sully has appeared in every game of the series. This latest attempt to get 'Uncharted' off the ground has Tom Holland in the lead role of Nathan Drake, and 'Bumblebee' director Travis Knight behind the camera.
While this might all seem promising, it's worth pointing out that the movie adaptation has started and stalled numerous times. Going all the way back to 2009, 'American Hustle' director David O. Russell was involved, before he bailed and was replaced by 'Limitless' director Neil Berger. Names like Bradley Cooper and, yes, Mark Wahlberg were bandied about for Nathan Drake, but nothing came of it.
As recently as three years ago, 'Stranger Things' bigwig Shawn Levy was involved with Joe Carnahan - the guy who wrote and directed 'The Grey', 'Stretch', 'The A-Team', and loads more - writing a script. That didn't go anywhere, and neither did director Dan Trachtenberg, who made '10 Cloverfield Lane'.
In short, we're not going to believe this is actually happening until we're sitting in the cinema. With that in mind, it's worth pointing out that while there is a release date of December 18th 2020 slated for 'Uncharted', it's entirely possible that this could once again go on the backburner and it'll be another eight or ten years before it happens again.
