When we first heard that Mads Mikkelsen had been cast in Rogue One, we were genuinely excited to see what he'd bring to the table.
Anyone who watched the criminally-underwatched Hannibal TV series will know that Mikkelsen's capable of commanding your attention and has a huge screen presence with very minimal movement and energy. However, this being a Star Wars film, details are almost non-existent about who he's been playing or what his role in the story is.
Well, that was until last night. In a interview with Kay Burley (HAH!), Mikkelsen spilled the beans pretty spectacularly. "I mean, I wasn't really sure whether I was wearing a Stormtrooper outfit or anything like that at that point," he explained.
"I read the script and it was very beautiful and Felicity's playing Jyn, a young and very strong woman. I play her father - and that was too much, I'm sorry."
You know those moments where it all goes kind of slow-motion and you realise how badly you've messed up? That's pretty much what happened with Mikkelsen. Of course, English isn't his first language, so maybe he misspoke or something? Who knows. When pressed on the subject of Darth Vader, Mikkelsen wasn't giving out any information.
However, it's been all but confirmed from set reports and leaks that Vader is making an appearance and, from what we're hearing, it's going to be pretty brutal.
So, thoughts on Mikkelsen playing Felicity Jones' father? It'd make sense, to be honest. As we saw in the trailer, we know Jyn Erso - that's Jones' character - has been on her own from the age of 15. What's more, Mikkelsen didn't feature in any way, shape or form in the trailer so that tells us he's not a hugely central figure in the film.
Our guess is that he features in either a flashback sequence or he's revealed as Jyn Erso's father later on and he's, like, an Imperial or something. We pretty much assumed he was going to play an Imperial because, come on, look at him.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story lands in cinemas on December 16th.
