After a long wait and delays, new cast member Chris Hemsworth has confirmed that 'Furiosa' has begun filming.
Hemsworth was cast as the leading antagonist for the 'Mad Max' spinoff this year. He posted on Instagram a picture of a 'Furiosa' slate with director George Miller's name visibly written on it. In the background is the infamous arid backdrop of 'Mad Max' films of the past.
The film centres on the titular Imperator, played most recently by Charlize Theron in 'Mad Max: Fury Road', which hit cinemas in 2015. Theron however was replaced by Anya Taylor-Joy as the protagonist, much to her disappointment.
The decision to replace Theron seems to have come from the story itself, which focuses on a younger Furiosa, before meeting Max. There are currently no more details around the plot.
Miller returns to direct, co-write and produce, which he has done for the last four 'Mad Max' films, alongside Doug Mitchell. Also returning are the Oscar-winning crew, including production designer Colin Gibson, editor Margaret Sixel, and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt. Composer Junkie XL, who worked on 'Fury Road' also returns.
Joining Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth is Abdul Yahya-Mateen II and Tom Burke.
New South Wales state Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced that 'Furiosa' will be "the largest film ever to be filmed" in NSW, surpassing 'Fury Road'. The film is set to bring in at least $350 million into the state's economy and create 850 jobs.
'Furiosa' releases in cinemas May 24, 2024.
