Assemble the best of O.T.T. slapstick and parody and what have you got? MacGruber 2 apparently. The action-comedy has a sequel in the making, with The Lonely Island's Jorma Taccone directing, SNL star Will Forte in the lead role and Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe co-starring.
As co-writer of the film as well, Will Forte's latest admission that the film sequel is in the process of screenwriting can be taken as a pretty definitive statement that there will be more SNL humour on the big screen soon. If only they could combine the beauty of The Lonely Island's 'I'm on a Boat' or 'Dick in a Box' with the extra dorkiness of the MacGruber inspiration MacGyver. Maybe you can only intertwine so much parody before it unravels or explodes.
Though the film was not a massive financial success, it has since gained cult following. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Forte stated June 10th my writing partners John Solomon, Jorma Taccone and I are locking ourselves in a room and writing it [...] We were happy with how the original came out. I guess you wouldn't call it a [box office] success but people got to see it, sometimes you just have to be happy with that'. That's right Forte, stay as strong as your name suggests and don't sell out for the big bucks. Who knows, maybe MacGruber 2 will be a surprise box-office hit, though we wouldn't (figuratively) put our money on it.
