Irish director Lorcan Finnegan has gone from strength to strength in recent years, with films including 'Vivarium' and 'Nocebo' under his belt and some big names taking his direction on-screen.

The Dubliner's latest film is 'The Surfer' starring Nicolas Cage as "a man whose surfing plans are thwarted by menacing thugs and even more menacing wild animals".

Shot in Australia, it looks suitably kooky and had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend - earning a 6-minute ovation, to boot.

Variety reported: "Cage appeared to be having a ball, beaming from ear to ear and waving across the room as cheers erupted around the Palais for the film, a wild, mind-bending adventure that sees the fan favorite hit the sort of deranged peaks not witnessed on screen since “Mandy.”"

In other news from Cannes, it seems that it was a particularly emotional weekend for film stars as both Kevin Costner and Selena Gomez were brought to tears after their respective films, 'Horizon' and 'Emilia Perez' both earned long ovations.
