It's only a few months away from the beginning of the shooting, but already Gambit's in trouble.
Channing Tatum, who's signed on to play the Ragin' Cajun and one-time X-Men member, is allegedly suffering from a bout of cold feet. Reports suggest that Tatum, who's eager to begin a directing career, is looking to pull out of the production.
This comes as a bit of a shock as Tatum has been quite vocal about his support for the movie and it's clear that Fox, the studio behind it, are banking on it and him to replace Wolverine and Hugh Jackman as their standalone franchise.
Rupert Wyatt, who directed the quite-good Rise of the Apes and the not-so-good The Gambler, is gearing up to begin production in a few months as a release date is scheduled for October 2016.
As it stands now, nothing has been confirmed and we'll have to wait for an official confirmation that Tatum is out. However, this could mean serious trouble for the film itself as Fox are no doubt keen to have this up and running very, very soon.
So who could potentially replace Tatum? Taylor Kitsch played the character originally in X-Men: Origins - Wolverine for about five minutes, so it's possible - unlikely, mind - that he could step back into the role.
Our understanding is that Tatum was courted specifically for this role and he's the studio's only choice.
Rumour suggests that Gambit was to make an appearance in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse and that there'll eventually be a crossover between Fantastic Four, X-Men and Gambit. However, the film gets kicked to touch because of this, this crossover may not happen.
In the meantime, we'll have to wait. What do you think? Was Tatum the right choice for Gambit?
