Lenny Abrahamson's new film, Room, debuted at this year's Telleuride to a rapturous response and a standing ovation.
Already, major trades such as Variety and Deadline have rowed in behind the film, with huge praise coming for both Brie Larson and Jacob Tremabay's performance.
Variety's Kristopher Tapley said of both Abrahamson and Tremblay that "Abrahamason deserves a ton of credit, not only for getting this performance from the boy but for casting him in the first place."
Meanwhile, Deadline's Pete Hammond said that Room "is a movie that asks a lot of its audience, but one that pays big rewards. It is one of the most emotional experiences I have had in a theater in a very long time. Right now, this minute, A24 should get its Oscar campaign rolling because there are multiple possibilities for nominations."
Abrahamson's previous film, Frank, was an indie darling and drew strong reviews from critics both here and abroad, with special regard for Fassbender's performance and the adaptation of Jon Ronson's book.
Room, like Frank and What Richard Did, is based on a bestseller. Emma Donoghue's 2010 novel shot to the top of bestselling list with its deep, pulverising portrayal of a young woman enslaved by a man in an 11 foot-by-11 foot room with a son in tow.
We won't get to see Room for quite some time yet, but with this kind of response for it, things are definitely looking up.
