Kurt Russell has signed on to replace Kevin Costner as slave trainer Ace Woody in Quentin Tarantino's western Django Unchained, reports The Heat Vision Blog.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L Jackson, Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz have all already joined the film, which is heavily into preproduction. Waltz apparently just badly damaged his back whilst "training on a horse" for his role. Tarantino has apparently always wanted to do a western and his casting here is pretty spectacular; he told the studio that he wanted as many movie stars as possible, and Sony have backed him with cold hard cash - still a shame Will Smith didn't have the balls to sign up, though.

Shooting will begin in November, for a release date around Christmas of next year.
