Last year's Kingsman: The Secret Service was something of an unexpected hit with audiences and critics alike.
It was loud, crude and featured Colin Firth beating the ever-loving s**t out of people. In short, we were fans.
The film performed quite well at the box office and, as you'd expect, a sequel is now officially in the works with Matthew Vaughn returning as directing.
In early interviews for the first one, Vaughn was optimistic about a sequel and talked about exploring what an American version of the Kingsmen - the super-secret agency in the first one - would look like.
Kingsman: The Secret Service was, at its very core, an ode to 1960's spy movies / TV shows like Goldfinger and Mission: Impossible.
What's interesting about all this is that Warner Bros. also have a similar vibe going on with their Guy Ritchie-directed The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
And wouldn't you know it, Matthew Vaughn and Guy Ritchie worked together at the beginning of their careers on Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch?
Odd how that works out.
So, are we excited for a Kingsman sequel? Most definitely. We enjoyed the first one, Taron Egerton was a solid choice to play the lead and the zaniness of it all really worked in its favour.
There's a definite opportunity to turn Kingsman into a franchise - which, we feel, was the objective of the first one. Put it out there, see how it does and build upon it.
